Vehicle description:
The 740.850 diesel locomotive was the product of an extensive upgrade of the original 740 class and is designed for medium-heavy shunting and track service, primarily in industry. The bogie assembly, underframe, driver’s cab and engine hood are taken from the original 740 class locomotive. The instrument hood is new and lower than the original rear hood, and the adjoining front face of the driver’s cab has been newly fitted with a wide windshield with perfect visibility, which predetermines the locomotive for use primarily in track service. The catwalks are newly accessed from flights of steps, and spacious and safe platforms have been created on the buffer beams for service personnel.
The original ČKD K 6 S 230 DR diesel engine has been replaced with a modern Caterpillar 3512 DI-TA unit, although the original traction generator, auxiliary drives and the relevant part of the hooding have been retained. The repowered locomotives have been left with their original class IDs and inventory numbers.
