Vehicle description:
The 798 class locomotive was the product of a comprehensive upgrade of the original 700–702 class at JLS. This unit, designed primarily for shunting on minor sidings and in factories, is a two-axle dual-mode traction vehicle with electric power transmission and a top speed of 25 km/h in diesel-electric mode and 5 km/h in accumulator mode.
The following parts from the original locomotive have been used: the underframe and buffers, including axle gearboxes and mechanical brake part. The new driver’s cab, mounted further towards the rear end, with large windows and side doors, is constructed across the full standard track gauge and has been fitted with a “tropical” (double) roof. The engine and auxiliary drives are located in the front hood and the batteries are mounted in the rear, shorter, section. In diesel-electric mode the locomotive is driven by a 66 kW Zetor Z1001 engine connected via a flexible coupling to an A250 traction alternator, which powers two TE 022 traction motors via a rectifier.
In accumulator mode, the traction motors are powered from a 75 KPM 250P traction battery with an output of approximately 22.5 kW. The traction motors drive a new downward mechanical traction gearbox via a flexible coupling. Power is transmitted to the axles via the original cardan shafts and axle gearboxes. Drum brakes are mounted on the coupling between the traction motors and the gearbox. The locomotive is also equipped with a regenerative EDB, hand brake and DAKO automatic and direct-acting brake. The compressed air source is a 3 DSK 75 compressor. The sole upgraded unit – for ŽOS České Velenice – was given the new number 798.501. The delivery of 798.001 for Czech Railways was cancelled.
